We work closely with management on each investment. Our team brings diversity in finance, engineering, project management and operations across the investment lifecycle. Each of us invests to align interests with investors and companies.

Andrew W. Dunn

Managing Partner

Andrew brings over 35 years of experience in investing and investment structuring. At Deloitte he served as national tax leader, vice chair of the firm and chair of client cabinet. In 2012, he co-founded Altas Partners, where he was managing partner. Additionally, Andrew has decades of board experience and leadership, including Hatch, NSC Minerals, Right Health, Aquila Resources, Upper Canada College Foundation, Children's Aid Foundation of Canada, University of Waterloo and the Canadian Tax Foundation. He is currently Chair of the McMichael Canadian Art Foundation in addition to his board roles with our portfolio companies. Andrew is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (FCPA, FCA) and received a Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Accounting (Tax) from the University of Waterloo, where he was Co-Valedictorian.

Julie Ward

Partner

Julie has been with Canadian Shield Capital since 2016, working closely with management teams on specific growth initiatives. She has over 15 years of M&A and consulting experience, has led strategy development, evaluated investments and advised on transactions across various sectors. Julie has held board positions with Rogue Resources, Peak Power and was an advisor to multiple ventures in Next Canada accelerator. Julie is a Professional Engineer, having received her Bachelor of Engineering from McGill University and an MBA from the University of Toronto Rotman School of Management.

Marka Okrutny

Vice President

Marka joined the team in 2018, bringing over 10 years of experience at Hatch, where she performed market and financial analyses, and provided advisory and process engineering services to the global mining and metals industry. Marka has managed feasibility studies with international teams for large industrial clients, governments and institutions such as the World Bank. Marka is a Professional Engineer, receiving a Bachelor of Chemical and Bioengineering from McMaster University.

Cecilia Kwan

Chief Financial Officer

Cecilia joined the team in 2024, bringing nearly 20 years of experience in finance with a focus on asset management. Cecilia has gained significant experience in various finance functions in Brookfield, encompassing transactional accounting, process design, controls implementation, FP&A, financial reporting and specialized purpose vehicles. Prior to her tenure at Brookfield, she held roles in both assurance and accounting advisory practices at Ernst & Young. She is a Chartered Professional Accountant, receiving her Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from the Haskayne School of Business at University of Calgary.

Walter Buckle

Tax Director

Walter joined the team in 2015, bringing over 30 years of experience as a Deloitte tax partner where he first met Andrew and has continued working with him for the past 30 years. Walter has significant experience in M&A and resource, with an emphasis on due diligence, business analysis, transaction structuring and related accounting considerations. He has prior board roles with the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation and the Canadian Music Centre and was previously CFO of The Anthem Entertainment Group. Walter is a Chartered Professional Accountant, receiving a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Finance from Saint Mary's University.

Callum O'Shaughnessy

Manager

Callum joined the team in 2019. Callum brings over five years of experience in evaluating investment opportunities, implementing operational improvements, developing strategic initiatives and managing construction and commissioning teams for heavy industrial and infrastructure clients at Hatch. He spent a year and a half living and working in Saudi Arabia, primarily on an award-winning turnaround and restructuring project for a heavy industrial client. Callum is a Professional Engineer, receiving a Bachelor of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering from Queen's University.

Arora Chen

Senior Analyst

Arora joined the team in 2019, having prior experience with PricewaterhouseCoopers, evaluating US and Canadian financial hedge and mutual funds statements. She was previously senior portfolio manager and director of outreach for the University of Waterloo's Student Investment Fund. Arora received a Bachelor of Mathematics and Master of Accounting from the University of Waterloo, is a Chartered Professional Accountant candidate and a Chartered Financial Analyst level II candidate.

Sacha Ulloa

Senior Accountant

Sacha has been with Canadian Shield since 2019, bringing seven years of accounting experience as Senior Accountant at Altas Partners where she first started working with Andrew. She has over a decade of volunteer leadership experience at her local community church and is currently a leader in the Young Women's Program. Sacha received her Diploma of Accounting from Seneca College.

Jessie Nguyen

Junior Accountant

Jessie has been with Canadian Shield since 2023, bringing 2 years of accounting experience as an Accounting Technician at Comwave Networks Inc. While previously living in Vietnam, Jessie has planned and executed numerous volunteer campaigns to assist children in need. Jessie received her Advanced Diploma of Accounting and Finance with Honours from Seneca College.

Abbey Hildred

Communications Analyst

Abbey joined the team in 2022, bringing three years of experience in marketing and communications throughout sports and financial technology fields. Abbey received her Bachelor of Arts in Communications (Co-op) with a Minor in Psychology from the University of Ottawa. She is continuing her education part-time at the Toronto Metropolitan University, pursuing a Certificate in Public Relations.

Victoria Joong

Office Manager

Victoria joined the team in 2022, bringing with her over ten years of experience in various roles throughout the health care industry. She has received a Diploma of Fashion Design and French immersion education, additionally, she took a sommelier course from George Brown College. Victoria is continuing her education at Fanshawe College working towards a Diploma in Business Accounting.
